Social Networking in Education - A Primer

Posted by Patrick Batty in TOPYX Academic, Social Networking, Interactyx, eLearning 2.0

It's interesting to consider the reasons elements of social networking are important tools to enhance the student experience in online education.

To do so, first, let's consider a live classroom scenario. In a live classroom, whether K-12 or higher-ed there are a few core elements. Instruction or lectures, questions, discussions, presentations, and assignments. Generally most people find, the more interaction there is in a classroom (at least interaction around the subject. ) the more interested the student is, and usually they gain better understanding. People learn easily when they participate, less so, when they simply watch or listen.

Now, let's move the classroom over to a traditional Learning Management System. LMS by nature, present content. In some cases, that's all they do. Most however, have the ability to present content and quiz and possibly submit an assignment. They have a wide array of administrative tools, and even content development tools, but for a student it's pretty much endless pages of content, and the occasional quiz.

When you think of it from that perspective, it doesn't sound like a great deal of progress from a classroom scenario. It's back to listen or watch a lecture, however, in this case the lecture happens to be online content. Unless some social networking tools are used, the traditional LMS has actually taken away the ability to interact with the instructor and fellow students. It doesn't really further their understanding of the content because they can't discuss, paraphrase, demonstrate. In other words it isolates them.

This is why social networking is important for learning. Just as important in online learning as in a classroom, social networking allows the students to chat or discuss about the content they are viewing. It allows them to show fellow students ideas about the topic. It allows them to help each other gain a complete understanding of the course material thereby actually learning!

This is precisely why we have brought TOPYX to the academic community.

Social Networking is the “NOW” survival tool for small business

Posted by Jodi Harrison in TOPYX, Social Networking, Interactyx

Social networking started out as a phenomenon of young people and grew into the business world.  Word of mouth is huge for businesses, especially small business - you have less wiggle room than big business.  Even big business realizes now it must do a better job of ‘linking up” with their customers.  A recent survey of 400 senior marketers conducted by the CMO Council has found that most companies are NOT tracking what’s being said about them.

Of the survey participants:

  • 56% said their companies have no programs to track or propagate positive word of mouth
  • 59% don't compensate employees based on improvements in customer loyalty or satisfaction
  • Only 16% said their companies have a routine system in place for monitoring what people are saying about them or their brands online

Social networking is exploding – is it part of your learning scheme?

Posted by Jeffrey Roth in TOPYX, Social Networking, Interactyx, eLearning 2.0

In a recent survey by Nielsen NetView, Americans are spending 83% more time on social networking sites vs. last year at home and at work.  It is becoming increasingly obvious that the use of social networking is becoming part of the fabric of everyday life. I can go and find the same type of stats on the growth in usage on smartphones.

So, if we can stipulate that social networking AND smartphones have changed  how we do so many things in life, it is not too far of a leap of faith to build this huge phenomena into one’s learning scheme – at the corporate offices or academic institutions.

Interactyx is underwriting a series of Webinars to show you how an integrated social networking and mobile learning can improve the learning experience.  Learners will be more engaged and willing to participate in an interactive learning platform that supports and promotes the fact that knowledge is socially instructed, and how we can extend that experience to smartphones.

I encourage you to sign up, participate and listen to our one of our Webinars; you can see our current schedule at: http://www.interactyx.com/interactyx-2.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX. For more information, blogs, forums, videosand even test driving TOPYX, please go to www.interactyx.com.
