Interactive economics e-learning tool, LiveEcon, now
allows lecturers to get students focusing on economics between classes
with its new feature, Engage. LiveEcon aims to engage students in
economics by allowing them to manipulate economic variables and immediately
see the effects in moving on-screen tables and charts, and now with the
product’s newest development, lecturers can also assign pre-written
exercises to students as homework and receive reports to monitor their
levels of understanding.
Engage's pre-set scenarios involve students' reading
a topical case study and then using LiveEcon's interactive modelling
tools to investigate the impact on the economy of these real-world
events. It also includes a ready-made quiz bank. The new feature has been
developed in response to calls from time-strapped lecturers for
pre-designed scenarios and the ability to monitor students' use of the
programme outside tutorials. Lecturers with existing course materials can
upload these to Engage and use them to set homework assignments through
the same interface.
Using Engage, lecturers receive reports in real-time
once students submit their answers to the pre-set exercises. Duncan
Crole, Managing Director of Interactyx believes this is an important
development for LiveEcon because the potential for facilitating students'
understanding of economics is increased. "Not only will students be
engaging with LiveEcon outside of tutorials but their lecturers can plan
lessons to suit the level of understanding they have demonstrated through
the homework," he said. "By saving time on setting assignments,
lecturers also have more time to deal with student queries and problems,
meaning that students should be able to participate more fully in
tutorials having gained hands-on understanding between lessons."
LiveEcon, developed by Interactyx, independent
providers of learning tools for the higher education sector, is currently
being used by over 30 universities in the UK and worldwide to help
undergraduates get to grips with economics. For more information on the
